Virgin Mobile will offer two iPhones, a 16 GB iPhone 4S model and an 8 GB iPhone 4 model, beginning on June 29. Coupled with these phones are three talk, text and data plans ranging from $30 a month for 300 minutes + 2.5 GB of data, $40 a month for 400 minutes + 2.5 GB of data or $50 a month for unlimited talk and text + 2.5 GB of data.
The good news? There is no contract required and if you already own an iPhone, your monthly rate could drop significantly. Existing users can opt (pay) out of their current contracts and bring their rates down this way.
The bad news? The buy in. New buyers will pay $549 for an 8 GB iPhone 4 or $649 for a 16 GB iPhone 4S and data speeds will be slowed after reaching 2.5 GB. There is also no mention of tethering, which is a feature that allows the iPhone’s internet connection to be shared with other devices, being included in their plans.
These plans come late in the iPhone 4 and 4S life cycle but they are still less costly options for using an iPhone. The iPhone 5 is expected to be announced by October.
